Data Catalogue Specialist (Microsoft Purview)
Job Description Roles & Responsibilities We are seeking a skilled Data Catalogue Specialist with hands-on experience in Microsoft Purview to support enterprise data governance and metadata management initiatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for configuring and administering the Microsoft Purview platform, cataloging enterprise data assets, implementing metadata standards, maintaining business glossaries, applying data classifications, and ensuring complete data lineage across complex data ecosystems. Working closely with data engineers, data stewards, business stakeholders, governance teams, and solution architects, the Data Catalogue Specialist will help establish a trusted, searchable, and governed enterprise data catalog that improves data discoverability, compliance, and business understanding. Key Responsibilities: Configure, administer, and maintain the Microsoft Purview environment in accordance with enterprise data governance standards. Design and manage Purview collection hierarchies aligned with business domains and organizational information architecture. Register, onboard, and maintain all in-scope enterprise data sources, including: DB2 Warehouse Databricks Unity Catalog DataStage Additional structured and unstructured data sources as required. Configure and execute automated metadata scans using Microsoft Purview native connectors. Capture and validate technical metadata including: Asset names Schemas Data types Nullability Column statistics Refresh frequency Monitor metadata scanning activities and troubleshoot connector or synchronization issues. Develop, maintain, and continuously improve the Microsoft Purview Business Glossary. Create business glossary terms, definitions, ownership information, stewardship assignments, and business relationships. Map enterprise data assets to approved business glossary terms and maintain metadata consistency. Synchronize business glossary content with centralized governance repositories where applicable. Configure, implement, and maintain Microsoft Purview classification rules. Apply Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) sensitivity labels across enterprise data assets, including: Public Internal Confidential Restricted Manage exclusion processes, notifications, and governance workflows for restricted or sensitive datasets. Document and validate end-to-end data lineage across enterprise data platforms, including: Landing Staging IDM Semantic layers Databricks Bronze Silver Gold architecture Utilize both native Microsoft Purview lineage capabilities and custom integrations where necessary. Configure custom metadata attributes to expose data quality metrics such as: Data Quality Index (DQI) Rule pass rates Profiling dates Data quality status Collaborate with data governance teams to ensure metadata completeness, consistency, and compliance. Prepare metadata artefacts for governance review, including: Metadata templates Classification registers Lineage documentation Governance reports Maintain version control and incorporate governance feedback into metadata assets. Ensure metadata standards, naming conventions, and governance policies are consistently applied across all catalogued assets. Support audits, regulatory compliance initiatives, and enterprise data governance activities. Work closely with data engineers, architects, business analysts, and data stewards to improve data discoverability and governance maturity. Identify opportunities to automate metadata management and improve catalog maintenance processes. Produce documentation, operational procedures, and technical guides related to Microsoft Purview administration and metadata management. Desired Candidate Profile Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline. Proven experience implementing and administering Microsoft Purview in enterprise environments. Strong understanding of enterprise data governance principles, metadata management, and data catalog solutions. Experience configuring Microsoft Purview collections, scans, classifications, glossary management, and lineage. Hands-on experience with Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) sensitivity labels and data classification policies. Experience working with enterprise data platforms such as: Databricks DB2 Warehouse DataStage SQL databases Cloud-based data platforms Strong knowledge of metadata standards, data stewardship, business glossaries, and information architecture. Experience documenting and validating end-to-end data lineage across modern data platforms. Familiarity with data warehouse and lakehouse architectures, including multi-layer data pipelines (Landing, Staging, Semantic, Bronze, Silver, Gold). Understanding of data quality concepts, profiling techniques, and governance metrics. Experience collaborating with data governance councils, business stakeholders, and technical teams. Knowledge of enterprise security, privacy, and regulatory compliance frameworks related to data management. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and documentation. Experience working in Agile or hybrid project delivery environments is an advantage. Microsoft Purview, Azure, or Data Governance certifications are highly desirable.
