Diesel Generator
Job Description Roles & Responsibilities Own the reliability, performance, and compliance of site diesel generator systems (prime/DCC/standby) including engines, alternators, controls, paralleling/synchronizing gear, fuel systems, and auxiliaries—ensuring guaranteed start, stable load sharing, and recovery to SLA after utility or facility events. Key Responsibilities Operations Supervise/execute weekly auto-start tests, black-building drills, manual/auto transfers, and load transitions. Manage start sequencing, warm-up/cool-down, and governor/AVR stability; monitor kW/kVAR/PF and V/Hz limits. Coordinate paralleled operation: droop/isochronous modes, kVAR sharing, reverse power/under-frequency protections. Maintenance Plan/perform PMs: oil/coolant/filter changes, valve lash, belts/hoses, jacket-water/space-heater checks, charge-air system, exhaust and flex joints. Alternator care: insulation resistance/PI, bearing checks, AVR/PMG/AREP inspections; bus/terminal torqueing. Fuel system: bulk/day-tank integrity, polishing, water/sediment control, microbial treatment, leak checks, level alarms & interlocks. Conduct routine load-bank tests (resistive/reactive) and trending (start times, crank duration, voltage/Hz recovery). Troubleshooting Diagnose start failures, hunting/surging, protective trips (overspeed, low oil pressure, over/under-voltage, UFRO), fuel starvation, smoke/temperature anomalies. Perform RCA/CAPA; update parameters and restore to service within MTTR. Controls & Integration Manage genset controllers, sync modules, dead-bus/live-bus close logic, breaker interlocks; interface with EPMS/BMS/DCIM. Maintain event logs, trend data, firmware/config backups. Compliance & Safety Adhere to LOTO/PTW, arc-flash awareness, fuel handling/HAZMAT, spill response. Keep records for audits (run hours, emissions where applicable), and ensure standards alignment (e.g., ISO 8528 intent, site policy). Vendor/AMC & Documentation Oversee OEM contractors, verify service reports, manage spares & critical kits. Maintain as-builts, one-lines, test sheets, checklists, impairment logs. Cross-Discipline Awareness UPS ride-through basics, switchgear control interlocks, chiller plant restart sequencing, fire/life-safety interfaces (e.g., fuel shutdowns), security access during drills. SLA & KPI Targets Start Reliability: ≥ 99.9% successful starts. Recovery: Voltage/Hz within spec in ≤ 10 s (site policy) after start; load acceptance per OEM. PM Compliance: 100% on-time; ≤2% approved deferrals. Incident Reporting: P1 report ≤24 h; RCA/CAPA ≤5 business days. Fuel Readiness: Minimum reserve hours met; water/sediment within limits; zero uncontrolled spills. Desired Candidate Profile Diploma/Degree in Mechanical/Electrical (or equivalent). 5–10 years with large industrial DGs (data center/critical facility preferred). OEM controller experience (e.g., Deep Sea/ComAp/Woodward/Caterpillar/MTU/Cummins). Technical Skills Governor/AVR tuning, sync & load-share, reverse power/ROCOF basics. Diagnostics using OEM tools; IR/PI testing; thermography; vibration/fluids trending. Familiar with NFPA 110 concepts (where applicable), ISO 8528 performance, fuel chemistry & polishing. Soft Skills Clear comms during drills/incidents; disciplined shift handover and log keeping. Vendor supervision and stakeholder coordination for change windows. Work Conditions 24×7 roster/on-call; mechanical rooms/yards; noise/fumes—strict PPE and safety compliance.
